Muslims Have No Monopoly over ‘Allah’
post info
By Anwar Ibrahim

By Anwar Ibrahim

Malaysia has once again resurfaced in international headlines for the wrong reasons. Over the last two weeks, arsonists and vandals attacked 10 places of worship, including Christian churches and Sikh temples. Though there were no injuries and the material damage is reparable, the same cannot be said about the emotional and psychological scars left behind. After numerous conflicting statements from government officials, the underlying causes of the violence are still unaddressed. Malaysia’s reputation as a nation at peace with its ethnic and religious diversity is at stake.

Malaysia’s poor handling of religious and sectarian issues is not unique. The ill treatment of minority groups in Muslim countries is often worse than the actions Muslims decry in the West. I have called attention to the broader need in the Muslim world for leadership that demonstrates consistency and credibility in our call for justice, fairness and pluralism. These values are embedded in the Islamic tradition as the higher objectives of Shariah expounded by the 12th-century jurist al-Shatibi.

We have seen Muslims around the world protest against discriminatory laws passed in supposedly liberal and progressive countries in the West. Yet just as France and Germany have their issues with the burqa and Switzerland with its minarets, so too does Malaysia frequently fail to offer a safe and secure environment that accommodates its minority communities.

The recent arson attacks exemplify what’s wrong with the way Malaysia regards its non-Muslim citizens. The attacks were provoked by a controversy over the use of the word “Allah” by Malaysia’s Christian community, which numbers over two million, or about 10% of the population. In late 2007, the Home Ministry banned the use of the word by the Herald, a Catholic newspaper, and later confiscated 15,000 copies of Malay-language Bibles imported from Indonesia in which the word for God is translated as “Allah.” A Dec. 31, 2009 ruling by the Kuala Lumpur High Court overruled the earlier ban, asserting constitutional guarantees regarding the freedom of religion in Malaysia. Since then, an already tense situation boiled over, largely due to incitement by a few reckless politicians, the mainstream media and a handful of nongovernmental organizations linked by membership and leadership to the United Malays National Organization, the ruling party.

For example, Utusan Malaysia, the nation’s largest Malay-language daily—which is also owned by UMNO—has inflamed Muslim religious sentiments by accusing non-Muslims of desecrating the name of the “Muslim” God and alleging a Christian conspiracy to overrun this predominantly Muslim nation through conversion. I have seen these incendiary propaganda techniques used before, when politicians and demagogues exploit public sentiment to garner support by fomenting fear. Such tactics are useful diversions from embarrassing scandals ranging from controversial court decisions, to allegations of exorbitant commissions extracted from military procurements, to the theft of two jet engines from the inventory of the Royal Malaysian Air Force. This behavior has been exacerbated since the ruling party lost its two-thirds majority in parliament last year. UMNO is now desperately struggling to regain public support.

Few Muslims around the world would endorse the claim that we have a monopoly on the word “Allah.” It is accepted that the word was already in the lexicon of pre-Islamic Arabs. Arabic’s sister Semitic languages also refer to God as “Allah”: namely, “Elaha” in Aramaic, and “Elohim” in Hebrew. Historical manuscripts prove that Arabic-speaking Muslims, Christian and Jews have collectively prayed to God, the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe, as “Allah” for over 1,400 years. The history of Islam in Southeast Asia is known for its pluralistic and inclusive traditions, and amicable relations between Muslims and non-Muslims have been the norm for generations.

Muslim scholars outside of Malaysia thus find our “Allah” issue absurd and cannot fathom why it has sparked protest and outrage. Minority Muslim populations living in the West, particularly in the aftermath of 9/11, have diligently tried to remind the public that Muslims, Christians and Jews share common Abrahamic roots and ultimately worship the same God.

Local sensitivities have been aroused over this issue. They should be handled through dialogue and engagement. Instead of permeating a sense of insecurity or a siege mentality, Muslims must be encouraged to engage and present their concerns to the Christians in a constructive manner. The example of Muslim Spain is a moment in our history to which Malaysian Muslims should aspire. But efforts toward fostering a convivencia are not only found in the past. The ongoing “Common Word” initiative, a global effort launched in 2007 that captured the support of over 130 of the world’s most prominent Muslim scholars, has made historic progress towards building goodwill among Muslims and Christians to find ways to live in sincere peace and harmony. It is ironic that noble efforts such as these are being undone by the actions of Muslims themselves.

Malaysia’s international reputation has taken a beating since Prime Minister Najib Razak was sworn in last year. Despite his efforts to promote national unity, news about the caning of a young Muslim woman charged with drinking, the mutilation of a cow head in protest of the construction of a Hindu temple, ill treatment of Muslim converts who revert to their earlier faith and even the outlawing of the practice of yoga by Muslims have many at home and abroad wondering which direction Malaysia is headed under Mr. Najib’s leadership. There are already misgivings about governance, human rights, the rule of law and rampant corruption; Malaysia dropped 10 spots on Transparency International’s 2009 Corruption Perception Index, our worst showing in over 15 years. The vision of Malaysia as a peaceful and stable location for investment, tourism and migration is now in peril.

This matters most for Malaysians who have to contend with an increasingly polarized social and political landscape. Malaysia cannot afford to be held hostage by the vested interests of a few who manipulate faith and identity as a means to elicit fear for political and economic gain. This is old politics, and it has become clear that those who incite hatred are only doing so to prolong their monopoly on power. The majority of Malaysians reject this approach. They realize that overcoming the challenges we face—a stagnant economy, declining educational standards and rising crime—depends on our ability as a nation to internalize and make real the principles of fairness and justice to all.

KONTROVERSI KEGUNAAAN KALIMAH "ALLAH"
By
Dr. Mahathir Mohamad
on January 5, 2010 10:00 AM

9. Tetapi dalam agama Kristian terdapat konsep "Trinity" yang mana terdapat "God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Ghost".

Wallahua'lam.

farewell gus dur

one of the political figure I respect most even vice versa to others is abdul rahman wahid. he was popular known as gus dur. as a former presiden of repulic Indonesia, gus dur have lots of thing make us scrathing our head or in Indonesian "pusing 7 keliling".
he was a son of KH Abdul Wahid Hashim. His father is the first aapointed minister for religious affair. gus dur is descendant of long heritage of notorious Nahdatul Ulama (NU). this is some Islamic organisation which prefer the orthodox way in determining islam. This Organisation is believe to be the biiggest Islamic organisastion in Indonesia despite their rival "Muhamadiya" (I'm Muhamadiyah Follower). I'ts believe his grandfather is the founder of this NU. so no wonder gus dur is a legend because he come from a legendary family that contribute a lot which make whats is Indonesia now. Indonesia history cant be separated from gus dur family. as early days gus dur is sent to egypt to study as he get a scholar ship. the bad thing is gus dur never finish his study as before he did in juniior high school. (he moved to yogyakarta to finish JUnior high school) what i heard and read about him he also study in us, german, netherland and france. but neither one of the university he finish the study. the famous Leiden University (Netherland)is also one of the unioversity gus dur once study in it. whwen people ask why you take so much university but never finish even one? gus dur said : I came to study to have the education and knowledge, nothing to do with finishing or not. it;s strange isn't it? is as same some one ask you how can u fail your spm and you said the paper is nonsense because to easy and not level to you. But gus dur proof his geniusity. we can track his career from just as techer for pesantren (belong to his family of course) untill became the first man in Indonesia. one of thing that i would tio share wtih all of you is his abality to speak at least 5 langgauge. while he was a president and on trip to over sea if he land in german he can deliver speech in german, also in netherland he can speak dutch. meeting with any arab respensetative in jakarta just speak arab to him. when gus dur in singapore he speak english. Theres a rumours that i heard he speak french with his family at home. the rare thing to do as president republic Indonesia before him or after him. even very rare to happen to head of country in this world. NU die hard fans is believing that gus dur is genius and have a 6 sense (nothing to do with m night shamalan)I'm not NU neither his die hard fan but i do believe he have these abilities. try to review his direct order of something with his president decision or his Pregoritif right. most of it full of polemic and arising hot issues. for example the ajonomoto case. at the time ajinomoto is found using part of pig to produce the msg. but this part from pig is not found at the end of process it;s use as catalyis. it's just like you cook vegetables and use chopboard to cut the leaves. the chopbord is not included at the end of cooking. it's the same happen to ajinomoto. Majlis Ulama Indonesia have reklease the fatwa that ajinomoto whhich certain product is haram. but, gus dur say it HALAL! nhow come? is this you call a genius? yes he is so genius. gus dur analytical thingking is far beyond our time. i figure out that gus dur have the reason to say it halal. As japan is one of the top and biiggest investor in Indonesia is hard to denying them. a million of people is depenmding on them which it's japan provide job and funding. if gus dur rule that ajinomoto haram, so aajinomoto will lost their profit a lot. imagine the factory have produce a msg enough for 2 000 000 people. where must you throw this msg. how many zillion kg of them? when this affect them so they must cut the workrs also because they have losing the profit. imagine how many japan factory and Indonesia work at that factory? so this maybe can make economic downturn became even worse. so the calming down the market gus dur incredibily pronounce its ajinomoto halal. this ijtihad is taken by 2 curcimstance. in fikh if come 2 option we must consider the most thing that will be affected to ummah. and gus dur take this kind of fikh method. of course after that ajinomoto also never use babi in any their product.
gus dur also believe to have the sixth sense. if he sit in the front of television and seems he is sleeping. he can describe what the tv programe we watch and what channel we turns to. weird right? and he also alomost completly blind. how can he knowwhat on the television show including if we change the channel while he asleep? have you seen how gur dur attending parliment session? (DPR RI) he sit and sleep! of course his eyes always shut. but without use any pen and paper to take note as his predessor did(bj Habibie always use pen and paper and smile while writing something as he heard from MP's)he know what happen even the thing never being brieffed by his assistant. the official president house are changing while gus dur ruling the country. no more heavy extra precautions as before. reporters are the one who get the benefit of this unstricness. they can easily approach gus dur without being stop by special unit of president bodyguard(pasukan Pengamanan Prsiden). president palace is no longger as mystical place to enter. gus dur put himself as the same level to others, that why people like him. unfortunately some thing go wrong. this is start when the top level kiai or described as kiai langitan is losing their faith on gus dur. to be 1st man in iindonesia one must gain suport from this certain kiai. without their support one can't be a president. this unofficial law is never writen but most of them obey this unwritten law. when they crooss thje line it's happen just like gus dur. the parliamnent impeach him. what a sad end to a president and hebecome the first president that being impeach by tje parliment.May god bless his soul.

beware of what u do online

as I become a blogger. i feel so happy because what i feels about something especiaalyy about some punk who run the gov like s*** can be expressed here. before this technology exist dont expect your unsastified about something especially something to do with political figure to be announced through newspaper or another mass media.. for me as i think i try to f them nicely with the sofest words that i can think about it. but for some blogger they extremely f somebody and sometimes daringly just make up the story for a sensation for their own purpose. they think they can get away of waht they have done. it's just a matter of time for the authority to catch who are doing threat to the country. how they know who u are as u never put anything honestly about your profile? haiya this is small matter ma.. ever heard of IP address? BTS? all this thing are tools to locate the responsible person who using the internet sideways. even u use cc they can still find you. dont forget most cc have cctv. the simple thing to show example of this matter is to watch any james bond movie or another spy movie.(bourne identity, enemy of the states, eagles eyes, the good sheperd etc)yeah some of them is to good to be true but dont under estimate what the technology can do now. just be carefull.anfd do responsible of what we do even we dont wan so. As what happen to a facebookers which publishing a threat about worship place of a religion. he got caught and held to court. dont be a victim. be consider

Allah is mankind god

when the year is changing...

as we facing year end, lots of preparation and expectation will arise at this time. for sure at least will be expectedted as we always expected every year this new year is always better than the previous years. and so on so on..... for me year end is nothing truly affected my life or my soul. i known new year as a date to re-count or re-run the number. . its mean after nine you repeat back no 1. but between every number there's a gap. thats gap only will be feeling to whom its may concern (IT'S SOUND LIKE AN OPEN LETTER TO GOV) who will be feeling it? just refer to Quran verse 103 (Al_ASR) which Holy Allah SWT cite for sake of time, man were always in great lose except for those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth and recommend one another to patience . so logically there's in nothing to do in estimating which year we will die. everyday is the same day even the year is different. we never take more step to the future as we believe. actually we in the ame constextual life which already written by Allah long before we born to this world. I dont mean so we must sit and relax as Allah already determine us and already given rizqi in some how in period. in this verse Allah ordering man to do righteous thing as the time is tide. so u'tsd up to us how we manage ourselves togheteher with Iman. may Allah Bless all the muslim whether stiil breathing or long time dead. Wawahualambisawab.
